✨ about this humble little corner of the web ✨

👋 About OSSmile

OSSmile is a tiny website with one job: be a little corner of good news. Snacks. Otters. World records nobody needed but everybody loves. The internet is loud and heavy; this place is on purpose neither.

Why does it look like this?

On purpose! 😎 The modern web all kind of looks the same — same dark mode, same rounded cards, same tidy little dashboards. We wanted somewhere that felt hand-made, a bit chaotic, and fun. So: tiled backgrounds, a visitor counter, a guestbook, and yes, a <marquee>. We regret nothing.

But here’s the trick — it doesn’t have to look like any one year. See the “★ View this site in ★” box up in the sidebar? That’s a little time machine. Flip it and the whole site re-skins itself to a different chapter of web history:

  • 📜 1995 · Netscape — the grey-and-Times-New-Roman early web. Blue underlined links, no marquee, “best viewed at 640×480.” Bare bones and beautiful.
  • ✨ 1999 · GeoCities — peak personal-homepage chaos and our house default. Comic Sans, confetti tiles, blinking text, an under-construction sign that will never come down.
  • 💎 2002 · Phoenix — the early-Firefox era. Glassy blue gradients, Luna-style buttons, the web starting to tidy itself up (but still having fun).
  • 🟧 2008 · Web 2.0 — rounded corners, soft gradients, “beta” badges, and that one specific shade of orange. The dawn of the web we mostly live in now.

Same words, same snacks — four completely different outfits. Your pick is remembered the next time you visit, and you can even share a specific era by tacking ?theme=netscape95 (or geocities99, phoenix02, web2-08) onto any link. It’s a tiny museum of the web, and you hold the remote. 🕹️

The rules of this place

  • Good news only.
  • No infinite scroll, no algorithm, no ads. Just minimal, cookieless analytics — the honest list is below. 👇
  • Pictures, links, and trivia strongly encouraged.
  • You are allowed — encouraged, even — to smile.
"a little corner of good news" isn't a tagline, it's a job description.

🍪 The "minimal tracking" truth box

Full honesty, because that's the whole vibe here. This site runs one thing that counts as tracking: Vercel's privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics. No ad networks, no accounts, no idea who you are. Here is the entire list of what it sees:

  • 📄 which pages get visited (so I know which posts you actually like)
  • 🔢 a rough visitor count — tallied without cookies or logins
  • 🌍 the general stuff every browser announces to every site: country, browser, device type, and the page you arrived from

And the things it pointedly does not do: no tracking cookies, no third-party cookies, no cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting, no personal data, and nothing is ever sold. 🤝

🏺 The cookie jar (such as it is)

Here's the part most sites wave their hands at. OSSmile does keep a little pile of stuff in your browser — it's just not the creepy kind. Technically it's not even cookies: it's localStorage, the modern cookie jar. Nothing in it is ever sent to a server, because there's barely a server to send it to. It exists only so the site remembers your toys. Here is everything in the jar:

  • 🎨 your chosen era — and any bonus themes you've unlocked
  • 🥚 your desk pet and how well you've been feeding it
  • 🏷️ your sticker book and loyalty card punches
  • 🔮 your horoscope sign, so you don't re-pick it every visit
  • 🗳️ which way you voted in the polls, so you can't stuff the ballot box
  • 📖 your guestbook signature and the dial-up mode toggle
  • 🔢 your personal visit tally for the little hit counter

That's the whole list. Clear your browser data and every bit of it evaporates — you'd start over with a fresh pet and an empty sticker book, which is genuinely the only consequence. 💛

☕ Throw me a bone?

OSSmile is a one-person passion project — no ads, no algorithm, no selling your data, just snacks and otters and good news. If you can, throw me a bone on Patreon 🦴 — it keeps the lights on and the marquees scrolling. And if not? Please still feel free to browse and smile 😊 — that was always the whole point.

New here? Start with the Snack Kingdom post, pull the lever on the Trivia-O-Matic, then sign the guestbook. That's the whole tour. ☕

* the badge says "made with ♥ not AI" — full disclosure, a friendly robot helped lay the bricks. The heart part is real though. 💛
