🍿 Crazy Snacks, Vol. 1: The World Is Eating WHAT?

📅 May 25, 2026  ·  mood: ravenous  ·  filed under: good news

Welcome to Crazy Snacks, a new recurring segment where we celebrate the snacks that look at “normal” and say no thank you. The world is enormous and people are putting everything in a wrapper, and honestly? We love them for it. Grab a glass of water (you may need it) and let’s go. 🍿

1. Japanese KitKats: the multiverse of chocolate 🍫

Japan treats the humble KitKat like a canvas. There have been 300+ flavors, including:

  • Wasabi (it works, somehow)
  • Sake (yes, the actual rice wine)
  • Baked potato, soy sauce, melon, purple sweet potato
  • Regional editions you can only buy in specific prefectures, turning candy into a souvenir

The name sounds a little like kitto katsu (“you will surely win”) in Japanese, so they became a good-luck gift for students before exams. A snack that is also a blessing.

2. Salmiakki: Finland’s salty licorice of doom 🖤

Finns adore salmiakki — black licorice flavored with ammonium chloride, which gives it a salty, tongue-numbing kick that first-timers often describe with words we can’t print on a good-news blog. To Finns: nostalgic, beloved, in everything from ice cream to vodka. To everyone else: an ambush. It’s an acquired taste, and the people who acquire it never come back. 🇫🇮

“It tastes like a tire had a baby with a salt lick.” — every visitor to Finland, lovingly

3. Honey Butter Chips: the snack that needed a bouncer 🍯

When South Korea’s Honey Butter Chips launched in 2014, they got so wildly popular that stores sold out instantly and people resold bags online at a markup, like scalped concert tickets. For a potato chip. The flavor — sweet, buttery, salty all at once — broke everyone’s brain in the best way and kicked off a whole sweet-and-salty snack arms race.

4. Pickle-flavored… everything 🥒

At some point pickle stopped being a food and became a personality. Pickle cotton candy. Pickle soda. Pickle popcorn. Pickle candy canes. Pickle lip balm (for when you want to commit). It’s a whole ecosystem, and it is thriving, and we respect the chaos.

Why this is on a good-news blog

Because snacks are proof that humans, given a moment of peace and a little spare flour, will immediately start inventing joy for no reason. Nobody needed a wasabi KitKat. Nobody’s survival depended on a pickle-flavored candy cane. We just made them because the world is more fun with weird little treats in it — and because somewhere, right now, someone is taste-testing a flavor so cursed it’ll end up in Crazy Snacks, Vol. 2. 🍿💛
