🍌 M&M's New Banana Nut Bread Flavor Is So Good, Someone's Keeping a Secret Bag in Their Desk Drawer

📅 June 16, 2026  ·  mood: delighted  ·  filed under: good news

Somewhere in an office right now, a food writer is sitting at a desk with a secret. Down in the drawer — past the spare charging cable, next to the emergency ibuprofen — there is a bag of M&M’s Banana Nut Bread. It is not for sharing. It is not going on the communal table. It lives in the drawer, and it is theirs. 🍌

The reviewer at The Kitchn liked M&M’s new Banana Nut Bread flavor so much they confessed to exactly this. And here’s the thing: the desk-drawer hoard is not a casual endorsement. Nobody hides a snack they merely like. You hide a snack you can’t be trusted around in public. So today we are not reviewing a candy — OSSmile is here to amplify the joy, not audit the ingredients. We are simply here to say: we get it. We would hide it too.

Why banana nut bread, of all things 🍞

Because it works, that’s why. Banana nut bread is one of the great comfort flavors — homey, a little retro, the smell of someone’s kitchen on a slow Saturday morning. It is the taste of a loaf cooling on a rack while it rains outside. And chocolate, as ever, is the natural co-pilot: warm banana, toasty nut, a little sweetness, and a chocolate center to hold the whole thing together.

We did not need this to exist. That’s the best part. Somebody at Mars looked at a humble loaf of banana bread and thought, what if that, but a candy you could keep in a drawer — and then they went and made it. It’s the same affection we hand to a bright blue cotton-candy soda: not a gap in the world being filled, just a small, deliberate addition of delight.

The banana that mostly vanished 🍌

Here’s the part that’ll stick with you. The banana flavor your brain recognizes from candy — that bright, almost-too-sweet banana-ness — doesn’t actually taste like the banana in your fruit bowl. And there’s a wonderful reason why.

The banana you grew up eating is the Cavendish: mild, sturdy, built to survive a long boat ride. But it wasn’t always the banana. For the first half of the 20th century, the dominant export banana on Earth was the Gros Michel“Big Mike” — and by all accounts it was a different animal: sweeter, creamier, more intensely banana than the Cavendish has ever managed to be.

Then, in the 1950s, a soil fungus called Panama Disease (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense) swept through the world’s Gros Michel plantations and wiped them out, one by one, with no cure. The Cavendish — blander, but resistant — stepped in to replace it, and that’s the banana that conquered the planet. But candy makers had already locked in the old flavor profile. So banana candy is, quietly, a flavor ghost: the taste of a fruit that mostly disappeared from store shelves before most people alive today were ever born. Every banana Runt, every banana Laffy Taffy — and now, every Banana Nut Bread M&M — is a little echo of Big Mike. 👻

M&M’s have always been ambitious 🍫

This flavor isn’t a fluke — it’s a tradition. M&M’s have been quietly proving for decades that the formula chocolate + literally anything has no ceiling. Crispy. Pretzel. Birthday cake. Fudge brownie. Peanut butter pie. Each one sounds slightly improbable on the box and then tastes, annoyingly, exactly right. Banana Nut Bread just took the next open seat at a very long table.

And the whole improbable thing rests on a wartime idea: M&M’s were invented in 1941 so soldiers could carry chocolate without it turning to soup in their hands. The candy shell was the breakthrough — a coat of armor for chocolate. Eighty-odd years later, that same little shell is out here delivering banana nut bread. Not bad for a field ration.

In praise of the desk-drawer snack 🗄️

Let’s go back to that drawer, because it deserves a moment. The desk-drawer snack is its own category of compliment, and it’s a high one. It is not the snack you set out at a meeting, or leave on the kitchen counter “for the team.” Those are public snacks — generous, replaceable. The drawer snack is different. It lives in the dark, next to the things you genuinely need, rationed out one small handful at a time. It is specifically, unapologetically, for you.

For a candy flavor to earn that status — from a food writer, a person who tastes new things for a living and is hard to impress — is a remarkable vote of confidence. Honestly, it might be the truest review a snack can get. Forget the star rating. The real five stars is: I hid it so I wouldn’t have to share.

Why this is on a good-news blog

Because somebody at Mars said “what if banana nut bread” out loud in a meeting, and instead of laughing, everyone said yes. And then a real person ate the result and was so quietly delighted they tucked a bag away in a drawer to make it last. No problem was solved here. No nutritional gap was filled. The world just got a tiny bit more fun on purpose — and a flavor descended from a vanished 1950s banana got to live one more cheerful life, this time in a candy shell, this time hidden lovingly beside the ibuprofen. That counts. 🍌🍫
